Ask Vegan-Friendly Restaurants to Post This Drought Notice in Their Window!

We are hearing about restaurants not bringing customers water unless asked, with some even offering discounts for customers who forego ice in their beverages. Yet these efforts are absolutely dwarfed by the disproportionately high amount of water used to produce meat and animal products compared to delicious plant-based vegan options.

– Water Footprint Network creator and water scientist Dr. Arjen Hoekstra says "Animal products form the single most important factor in humanity's water footprint" and "We need to re-examine the place meat and dairy have in the diet of modern man."

– Stockholm Water Prize Laureate water scientist Professor John Anthony Allan says, "Less meat; more water," calling going veg "the magic demand management thing that could be done" to avoid water crisis. (Both of these world-renowned water scientists eat plant-based diets due to their own undeniable research that meat products require an unsustainably high amount of water.)

– TIME Magazine reports ""Eating more meat and dairy has been the single greatest factor for water consumption in the past 30 years." And the list goes on and on.

Let's break this down for a minute. Since 16 standard 8-ounce glasses of water equal one gallon, and National Geographic says a vegan diet saves an average of 600 gallons of water a day (a very conservative estimate compared to many others), that means it would take 9,600 meat-eaters foregoing their glass of water at a restaurant to equal what ONE vegan saves in a single day through their diet choice alone! Yet skipping ice cubes makes the news? So let's change this conversation! Print out these signs and ask vegan, vegan-friendly, or restaurants that have any vegan option at all to post them in their windows. (If you need talking points, print out our leaflet and bring it along or refer to these thoroughly sourced quotes/stats.)

If you print it out, please consider making a donation here.

Above: Moncai Vegan in San Diego said they don't put up signs in their window - until they saw this one and made an exception!

Take a picture of the sign posted in the restaurant window and send it to your local news outlets, and post on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #TruthOrDrought and the name of the restaurant. Alert your local media and give them the real story. California does not have time to waste. Together we can get the media actually reporting about the single most significant water-saving effort an individual can make (instead of talking about ice cubes, for goodness' sake)!
